Location:
Tahiti and Her Islands comprise an area officially known as French Polynesia. The islands are scattered over four million square kilometers of ocean in the eastern South Pacific and consists of five archipelagoes: the Society Islands, Austral Islands, Marquesas Islands, Tuamotu atolls and the Mangareva Islands. Tahiti is the largest island in French Polynesia.
Weather:
Cooled by the gentle breezes of the Pacific, the climate in French Polynesia is sunny and pleasant. There are two seasons: from November through May the climate is warmer and humid, while April through October is cooler and drier. Most of the rain falls during the warmer season, but there are also many lovely sunny days during these months, with refreshing trade winds.

The currency in Tahiti is the French Pacific Franc (CFP), though credit cards and US dollars are common. Though exchange rates vary, there are approximately 100CFP to the US Dollar. All visitors to French Polynesia must have a valid passport, which depending on the nationality of the visitor, contains a valid visa. French Polynesia enjoys a high standard of health, with excellent medical and dental services, pharmacies, private clinics and a large goverment hospital in Tahiti, which is open 24 hours. The outer islands have hospitals or dispensaries and a few private practitioners. Please take precaution and do not overexpose your body to the tropical sun. Tennis shoes or plastic sandals are recommended when walking on the reefs and in the lagoons of Polynesia. Certificates of inoculations against cholera, yellow fever and the plague are required for visitors arriving from an infected area as defined by the World Health Organization.

Tipping:

Departure Tax:
An 8 percent tax is added to the cost of a room in the hotels of French Polynesia. This tax does not apply to the pensions and family lodgings. There are no sales taxes and no airport taxes.
